Greetings and welcome from all of us at Empire Guitars! Owner Jeff Keithline has been a professional musician for 40 plus years and an avid participant in all aspects of music making. When he and business partner Michael Goldstein opened a new Empire Loan location in 2006, Jeff saw an opportunity to expand Empire's modest vintage guitar retail business into the store he had always dreamed of. He hired two gentlemen experienced in various aspects of the music world (including current store manager Mike Samos) and together they laid the groundwork for actualizing Jeff's vision. Their goal was to create a space not just about selling instruments, but also about knowledge sharing and community; a place where guitar lovers congregate and musicians come to discuss the tools of their trade. Since its humble beginnings, Empire Guitars has grown into one of the best vintage and used instruments stores on the New England area. Vintage Gear America is owned by John Nelson a native Californian and professional guitarist known primarily for having played lead guitar for John Lee Hooker and Eddie Money. John’s relentless interest in vintage gear eventually developed into his post-musical career of buying and selling high-end vintage guitars. Having grown up in a musical environment with a guitar maker father, John’s insatiable interest in vintage instruments and related information eventually developed into a high level of expertise. Vintage Guitars from the Blues Capital of the World
While we do not operate a brick-and-mortar store, we do have over 40 years of experience in buying, selling and collecting vintage guitars, as well as selling other desired and collectible objects online. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to offer guitars from the collections of several of our former customers, current associates and working musicians. And while we consider ourselves "educated" about guitars, we are hardly "experts", so if you see or read something that doesn't quite seem right, please let us know. We will look into it and totally appreciate the feedback! A LITTLE HISTORY... In December of 1980, I saw an ad in the Musical Instrument classified section of the Saturday Chicago Sun-Times. The whole listing read "Les Paul Goldtop. $400". I already had one Les Paul (69 Custom, paid $650, still have it), but if one is good, two is better. I had the cash, I checked it out, rectangular case, it looked decent, so it bought it. Later that afternoon, Jim Beach at Wooden Music offered me $1,200 for it. Turns out, it was a 69 Les Paul Deluxe in great condition with its original gold-lined rectangular case (still have it). Jim pointed to his wall; he had a 68 Deluxe hanging there for $1,500. (That was the day I learned something about 68-69 Gibson headstocks.) 1980 was ending, the serial number was 81 and four 7s, an omen! That day, I was bitten by the bug, and infected for a lifetime! I've been a player for 60 years, a collector for more than 25. I specialize in Gibson ES-335s, 345s, 355s from the 50's and early to mid 60's. Nobody in the world buys more 1958-1964 ES-335's, 345's and 355's and nobody sells more of them.
