Description
This DCPA4 is a fine example of this next generation of Martin acoustic technology which combine modern guitar specifications with the famous Martin quality and sound; the DCPA4 is the dreadnought cutaway glossy top version with Fishman Premium Blend electronics. This particular guitar was made in early 2012, according to its serial number (1665927), so its solid tonewoods are thoroughly seasoned and at their resonant best. The DCPA4 is a superb American-made acoustic guitar with Martin’s 21st-century electronics at a more affordable price (about $1900 MSRP) than the D-28 and beyond.
This model features a solid sapele mahogany back and sides in a satin finish with black binding and a glossy finish solid Sitka Spruce top. Structurally, it has a dovetail neck joint and the X-braced top has scalloped braces. With its tortoise pick guard, multi-stripe rosette, black belly-style bridge with white black-dot pins and compensated saddle, black fingerboard with off-set pearl-dot inlay, hardwood headstock overlay with raised gold foil logo, and enclosed chrome Martin tuners, this is the picture of a quality guitar--topped off, of course, with the C. F. Martin name on the headstock which says it all!
The playability and sound verify the quality promised by the name. The body dimensions are similar to those of most dreadnoughts: it has a 14/20-fret fingerboard, a 25.4” scale, a fingerboard width of 1 3/4” at the nut and 2 1/8” at the 12th fret, and the deep cutaway to afford easy access to the entire fretboard. The Martin dovetail neck joint and scalloped spruce bracing of the top combine with the great strength of sapele mahogany to allow for thinner, more responsive tonewoods, making for the rich, bright sound characteristic of the DCPA4. The modified low-profile neck is fast and comfortable, which is good because you won’t want to put it down for hours, and with the Fishman Premium electronics you can jam with anybody in any venue.
This Martin DCPA4 guitar is in very good playing condition, as you could expect of a 2012 Martin: straight neck, little fret wear, flat top, solid bridge, tight tuners, and so on, with the action set up at a comfortable 3/32” at the 12th fret low E. There are two professionally repaired cracks, one in the back lower bout and another in the treble side (faintly visible in the pictures). Cosmetically, it’s also in good shape, although there are a few dings and bruises, a bruise at the upper bout binding and some buckle rash in the back, and some faint pick marks in the top if you look really closely. The beautiful finish on the back and sides is in very good condition, and above all there’s the Martin logo certifying that it was born and bred in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
The thermoplastic hard shell case looks like a 1970s Martin case but it has no logo indicating that. It obviously is not original, but the hardware all works perfectly, and the familiar plush interior is in good shape, as seen in the pictures. While the top shows a little wear, it still offers great protection for this excellent guitar.
