Description
Gibson 1902-1907 Orville Style O - Rare Antique Vintage Acoustic Guitar w/ Case - Ebony Black (Pre-Owned)
A fine instrument. A work of art. The Gibson Orville Style O.
Orville Gibson started making instruments in 1894. The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company Limited was established on October 11, 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. This guitar is believed to have been made during the company’s first year of operation (although the hand-inked serial number is faded from age).
Orville Gibson was a skilled guitar builder. His character reflected a combination of talent, dedication, and eccentricity that epitomized the soul of American guitar. Most of his early instruments were elegant and baroque, featuring arched tops, sculpted scrolls and points, intricate inlays, and curlicue script logos.
Gibson believed wholeheartedly in the superior vibrating characteristics of unstressed wood. When constructing the sides of a mandolin, for example, rather than bending flat strips of wood, he would cut them to shape from solid boards.
Orville Gibson made his first guitars with carved arched tops. His classic archtop acoustics were designed for big volume. These beautiful creations had a long-lasting effect on the later Gibson Company’s output. Gibson led the way with archtop guitars for decades, and continues to lead the industry in craftmanship and quality to this day.
This Orville Style O guitar has been owned by a private player/collector since the 1990's and kept in top playing condition by SF Guitarworks, San Francisco, CA. This is a rare, antique, vintage guitar worthy of the most discerning aficionado.
