Schecter Chandler Telecaster - ex Pete Townshend (The Who)

Description

A true piece of rock history, this guitar stands as a survivor of one of the most iconic stage traditions in rock culture: the ritual destruction of instruments. From Kurt Cobain to Pete Townshend, smashed guitars became symbols of a rebellious, anti-establishment movement — a single gesture encapsulating an entire generation’s defiance. Among them, Pete Townshend turned this act into an art form of its own, famously ending performances of My Generation in an explosion of splintered wood and free-falling feedback.
Very few of his stage-played instruments from the late 20th century escaped this fate, which makes this example all the more extraordinary.

This Schecter Telecaster was played by Pete Townshend during the legendary 1979 “Who Are You” tour, and it even bears a scar on its side — perhaps the trace of a near-destruction attempt by Townshend himself. A rare survivor of his ferocious stage energy.

Originally gifted to Townshend by David Schecter at Madison Square Garden during the tour, this guitar has an exceptional story. Townshend played it on stage before sending it back to the UK to have a B-Bender installed. After retrieving it, he later returned it to London, where it was purchased by Keith Page, Gary Moore’s guitar tech. The guitar then went on to be used by Gary Moore for several takes on the albums Run For Cover (1985) and Wild Frontier (1987).

Carrying visible marks of its long, very British rock’n’roll life, this Schecter Telecaster is not only a remarkable survivor from Pete Townshend’s stage arsenal — it is also a rare instrument played by both Townshend and Gary Moore.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a genuine, battle-tested relic of rock history.
