1935 Gibson L-5 Special – Sunburst

Description

At first glance, this may look like every other Gibson L-5 you’ve seen, but look again! This 1935 example features a custom-ordered round soundhole, rather than the model’s typical dual f-holes on the lower part of the body. We have never seen another L-5 quite like this one, as it stands out for its unique features and stunning appointments. It looks as though Gibson may have borrowed some specs from their L-4 model, which did come with a round soundhole, though with different features and inlays. Inside the case, you will find a letter from Gibson, written in the 1980s, identifying this guitar as a custom order most likely from 1933, as evidenced by its build and serial number. However, in a more recent discussion with Gibson, they advised us that this guitar is one of a kind and dates to 1935. Inside the soundhole, you will see a Gibson label denoting the model and marking it as “Special”. Aside from these features, it is also just stunning to look at, with beautiful flamed back and sides and a gorgeous sunburst finish. The flowerpot logo on the headstock is one of our favorites from Gibson, and it’s nice to see it accent this custom piece, alongside the block inlays on the fretboard and gold-plated parts. This guitar is a great player, with that round soundhole enhancing its great resonance and beautiful tone. L-5s are relatively rare to come by. Add to this a custom spec, and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind instrument that you will surely never come across again.
