1996 Gibson Everly Brothers Signature Limited Edition - Black

Don and Phil Everly approached Gibson in the early 1960s with specific ideas about what their signature guitar needed to do. Don Everly devised the double tail-fin pickguards himself — they extended below the bridge to protect the top from his vigorous strumming. The moustache bridge with star inlays was designed by their father Ike Everly. The black finish was the standard specification. The result was one of the most visually distinctive acoustic guitars Gibson has ever produced — a guitar that you can tell a mile off, and whose combination of double pickguard and star inlays is one of the most instantly recognizable in the history of acoustic guitar design.

From 1962 to 1971, only 488 Everly Brothers models were made. The model was discontinued in 1972 and reissued periodically thereafter, achieving the status of cult classic that eluded it commercially in its original production run. The player roster is remarkable: Tom Petty, Cat Stevens, Paul McCartney, and Roger Daltrey all owned and played Everly Brothers guitars. Cat Stevens used a 1969 black J-180 to record Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat — two of the most important acoustic albums of the early 1970s. Elvis Presley owned one. Jimmy Page owns an early black 1962 example.

This 1996 limited edition — number 56 of 100 — is signed by Don Everly on the inside label, a provenance detail that makes this specific instrument directly connected to the man whose playing and design input created the model. The AccuVoice electronics with balanced output are the period-correct onboard system for this edition, ready for direct connection to a PA or recording interface. The sitka spruce top over maple back and sides produces the balanced, projecting tone with the percussive attack that the brothers pioneered — which made this guitar the rhythm foundation of some of the most influential records of the early rock era.

The rosewood moustache bridge with star inlays, double pickguards, graduated mother-of-pearl star fingerboard inlays, and gold tuners are all correct and original. Slim Taper mahogany neck at .886" at the first fret. At 5 lbs 5.5 oz this is a remarkably light instrument for its body size. Original hardshell case included.

The guitar shows finish checking, which gives it a classic look for sure. It was really hard to catch in pictures - look for the one closeup to check it out. The frets are in excellent shape and the neck set is spot on. The action is low and the saddle is high. There is room in the truss rod for future neck relief adjustments.

Original paperwork is included in the case.
