1960 Fender Princeton 5F2-A Tweed All Original Except the Handle - Tweed

Description

No sales tax for US customers outside California.

This amp is really clean and completely original with the exception of the handle. The circuit is untouched. We've got a knack for finding these pristine examples, and I like to advertise them in case a collector wants to keep it that way. I do recommend updates to the electrolytic bypass and filter caps if you plan to use the amp, a grounded power cable as well. I will update the amp for the buyer for an additional $100, housing the new caps inside the original cardboard sheaths. I have gray, grounded power cables that keep the look authentic.

I brought the amp up slowly on a variac and it worked well for the short time that I tried it out. It will sit here unused until it is sold.

The 5F2-A is the last and most refined version of the tweed Princeton circuit. The 5F2-A is housed in a more spacious Harvard-sized cabinet — the "big box" configuration — which for a relatively small speaker creates a particularly round, rich, and full sound that the earlier smaller-cab Princetons don't produce. The circuit is much similar to a 5F1 Champ with a tone control added — and the -A revision abandoned the choke present in the earlier 5F2, featuring a tone circuit derived from the Harvard 5F10 that when pushed tapers off nicely into warm and smooth overdrive at full volume.

The tone is articulate, dynamic, and commanding — with the sizzle and churning overdrive character of a Champ, but with more tonal range and fuller low end. The tone control is genuinely usable for dialing in exactly the right amount of top-end snap and brightness. Four watts from this circuit is not four watts from a modern solid-state amp — single-ended Class A topology with tube rectifier sag produces a dynamic, harmonically complex signal that responds to pick attack and playing dynamics. These amps have been recording staples for decades precisely because that character is irreproducible by other means at any volume or price point.

The rectifier and power tubes are likely original to the amp. The previous owner put a 12A7 in to lower the gain in the preamp. I will put a GE 12AX7 in the amp from my stash prior to shipment.

Shipping policy:

When you purchase this item you are hereby agreeing to this shipping policy. We remove tubes from amps that could be damaged in shipping. These cases require the buyer to re-install them on delivery - it is very easy with this amp, and we label them so you know exactly where to put them. We do this because we have experienced shipping issues in the past, and this is our prevention measure. Vintage amps are sold as-is because they can need service intermittently. Everything is tested here in our shop on the way into our inventory, and again before shipping. We will cover shipping damage, but we cannot be responsible for the failure of vintage components in 20-to-50-plus year old amps. Shipments will require signature on delivery, no exceptions. If there is damage, the buyer must retain all packing materials intact and picture them immediately and send them to . Less than 1% of our shipments are damaged in transit, and we are committed to making sure your item arrives safely, but we are taking these additional measures to make sure you are happy with your purchase.
