2017 Fender 62 Stratocaster Relic Journeyman - Surf Green

Every one of these Journeyman relic Fenders we've had through the shop have been winners. Surf Green on a 1962-spec Stratocaster is one of the most visually appealing combinations in the Fender Custom Shop catalog — a factory custom color from the original era, applied here over a roasted alder body with the Journeyman Relic aging treatment that gives the finish the character of a guitar that has been played and cared for over decades without the dramatic distressing of a full relic.

The Journeyman level is specifically described as simulating a guitar that has been played but well-maintained — more character than a Closet Classic, less destruction than a Heavy Relic, and the level that many players find most convincing as a representation of a real vintage instrument.

The roasted alder body and quartersawn roasted maple neck are the material upgrades that separate this instrument from standard Custom Shop production. Roasting woods alters the cellular structure in ways that produces a drier, more resonant tone with improved note definition and punch — closer to the character of well-aged vintage wood than fresh-cut lumber. The quartersawn neck blank adds further dimensional stability, reducing seasonal movement and providing the tighter, more consistent grain orientation that vintage players associate with the best-feeling necks.

The 60s Strat Relic pickups reading 5.62k bridge, 5.81k middle, and 5.83k neck are in the correct range for period-accurate early 1960s Stratocaster single-coils — bright, clear, and dynamically responsive with the characteristic in-between quack in positions 2 and 4 that defines the Strat sound. The green/black/green nitrocellulose pickguard looks so good on the surf green body. Neck specs include: Bone nut, 60s oval C neck profile at .790" at the first fret and .930" at the twelfth, AAA rosewood fingerboard with medium jumbo frets at 9.5" radius. Coffee white relic knobs and vintage-style Fender logo tuners complete the period-correct presentation. Action set at 2/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. At 7 lbs 5 oz this is a light, resonant instrument. Original hardshell case included.

The frets show the lightest wear. The neck is straight and the truss rod has room for future neck relief adjustments. The setup is perfect. The guitar had an aftermarket set of pickups in it when it arrived, but the previous owner had kept the originals with their original wire lead length. I re-installed them prior to listing. Other than that, the guitar is 100% original.
