1935 C. F. Martin 000-28 Natural
Description
SN 59282: Seasoned 000-28 from 1935, one of the most desirable years of the golden age. Only 52 000-28s shipped that year. This example does not disappoint. It’s a well-played instrument that still sings and rings. It’s had its fair share of bumps and bruises, but retains its structural integrity and originality. There are a few small cracks on the rim – lower bout, treble side – that have been repaired long ago, one with the charming linen patch that was the violin luthier’s standard. There’s a hairline in the grain on the back that has been topically attended to. I can’t see a trace of it inside. The Brazilian grain is straight and tight. The Adi top has fine grain on the moving to medium grain near the center seam. The top is crack free but has been played vigorously. The finish is original with the possible exception of a little touch up around the rim treble side hairlines.
It features all the classic specs and appointments of the period: forward shifted scalloped X-bracing, ivoroid binding, and the signature herringbone trim. The mahogany neck sports a volute, an ebony fingerboard with long-pattern snowflake and diamond inlays, and a Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay with decal logo. The modified V feels full but comfortable. The back of the headstock is stamped—1935 being the last year for this detail. The insides are original and age appropriate. Tuners installed are five original clipped end Grover G-98s and one that is close.
She’s had a recent neck reset and refret with a more recent setup by Mark Tossman. The action is adjusted for fingerstyle with medium low action and plenty of saddle.
The case is original to the guitar. It has been partially restored and functions well. There’s one latch that came off but it still with the case. As I’ve always said, original cases are for the next owner not the current one.
BTW: the pictures show replacement tuners but the originals are back on. Hit me up for a picture if you’d like to see.
