~1920 Oscar Schmidt LaScala w/vine inlaid fret board playable project

Description

1920s Oscar Schmidt "La Scala" solid Koa parlor guitar with pearl vine inlaid fret board. This guitar is in superb cosmetic condition, but needs some work to be in top playing order. I'll start with the good, and move on to what it needs below. The top, back and sides of the guitar are solid Koa and are crack free. The top bracing is ladder pattern...the first brace below the soundhole is marked with the number "06417 80"...some kind of factory marking, not sure of the significance (if any). The neck is mahogany with maple and rosewood strips up the center, the neck has a generous "V" profile. The bridge is rosewood and the fret board appears to be dyed to look like ebony (but not ebony). The fret board is inlaid with beautiful abalone shell vine pattern that extends the length of the board. The lower bout width is 12 1/2", the scale length is 24 3/4" and the nut width is 1 3/4." The guitar appears to be entirely original inside and out. There are no cracks or damage, no repairs, and virtually no wear. The finish is very clean, no dings/scratches or scrapes. In its current condition the guitar can be tuned and played in the first position. However, the action is much too high as you move up the neck and there are several issues that need to be noted. First and most important is that the neck has significant forward relief (which will require either a heat-straightening or compression refret, addition of a truss rod or other neck reinforcement) AND the neck angle needs to be reset. There's a little gap visible behind the heel (see pic), which would resolve with removal and reset of the neck. The neck heel and neck block are solid though, so the heel gap is indicative of a glue joint failure rather than a structural problem with the heel itself or the neck block. There is a small gap under part of the bridge that should be reglued and the seam between the two panels of the back shows some movement that should be repaired. There is no gap along that joint, but rather some noticeable movement when you press on the joint. With the neck reset and properly straightened, this will be a great little guitar. Comes with modern hard case. PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE MADE EVERY EFFORT TO THOROUGHLY EXAMINE AND DISCLOSE THE ISSUES THAT EXIST WITH THIS ITEM.
