1905 Gibson Style R Harp Guitar

Description

The Gibson Style R Harp Guitar, with its natural finish and deluxe appointments, was their first such instrument, only listed in the 1902 catalog. The Style Rs are distinguished by their glued-on pin bridges with an engraved nickel-plated tailpiece fixture that helps support the extra tension of the strings on the bridge, banjo-style tuners for the sub-bass and triple bound top. Fancy inlays adorn the ebony fingerboard.

This Style R has six sub-bass strings and a straight neck with good action making it a very playable piece of musical history! The carved top is spruce, the one-piece back is highly-figured walnut, the sides are walnut and necks are mahogany with many decorative wood plies. There are several well repaired back cracks, some fret wear and minor fingerboard pitting, but this example is in exceptionally fine shape for a 120-year-old instrument. The original case is also in excellent condition. Comes with signed certificate of provenance.
