Description

Previously owned by Hollywood film star Peter Fonda. This guitar has had a neck reset and a refret (you’re welcome), done by Gruhn Guitars in Nashville. Peter Fonda, who passed away in 2019, was twice nominated for an Academy Award for acting and screenwriting. His father was the great Henry Fonda, and was himself father to Bridget Fonda. Bridget is married to Oingo Boingo founder and soundtrack composer extraordinaire Danny Elfman. Peter Fonda was an important figure in the counterculture movement of the 1960s (look up the peace sign.) Peter co-wrote and starred in the film “Easy Rider” in 1969 where he and Dennis Hopper rode motorcycles through the South. The movie captured the imagination of the post-hippie era in America. Turns out he played coffeehouse gigs as well. Peter was hanging with the Beatles and once, when under the influence of LSD, famously remarked “I know what it’s like to be dead” and John Lennon used the phrase in “She Said She Said” on Revolver. Peter recorded the song “November Night”, written by Gram Parsons, and “Catch the Wind” by Donovan. He also starred in the film “Outlaw Blues”, about an ex-convict and songwriter trying to break into the movie business. He played this guitar in that movie. If you google “Peter Fonda’s Martin D-45”, you get some more info. Heritage Auctions sold this with Peter’s autograph on the top. Note the clear pickguard added, and there is a crack repair on the headstock. Also, a good pickup installed with volume and tone controls. Henry Fonda was one of Hollywood’s greatest stars. Peter Fonda cut his own path as a screenwriter and actor and he played and loved this iconic Martin. A really cool classic flattop with a killer story. Consigned.
