Description

Few instruments can be described as truly innovative – and while multiscale, fanned fret, headless, and similar models have dominated production in recent years, none offers as many sonic options as the guitar we'll be reviewing today – the James Tyler Variax, handcrafted in Los Angeles, USA.

This Swiss Army knife-like guitar features an alder body and a bolt-on, one-piece maple neck. The neck features a maple fingerboard with 22 jumbo nickel frets. Chrome hardware includes Hipshot Open Gear locking tuners, a James Tyler tremolo bridge with L.R. Baggs piezo saddles, and rotary controls. The electronics section features three pickups in a H/S/S configuration, and this is where all the magic happens – the knob that would be the first tone knob on a Stratocaster has been transformed into a guitar model knob – emulating various famous models, such as the Telecaster, Stratocaster, Les Paul, ES-330, Gretsch Duo Jet, and even the Rickenbacker 370, to name a few. But that's not all! A built-in rotary switch on the top of the guitar allows for instant tuning changes! E Standard, Drop D, Drop C#, Eb Standard, or maybe even open D? The choice is yours.

The guitar is used but in excellent condition. The main flaw is a crack in the paint near the neck pocket, which is common on S-shaped models. The pickguard has some minor scratches, nothing out of the ordinary for a used guitar.
