Description

Sears Harmony 1227 12-String 1969 | $775 | (v2601) "Be your own accompanist.. 12-string Guitar gives the sound of 2 guitars at once.." ..touts a late 1960s Sears catalog page. In 1916 Sears, Roebuck and Co. bought the Harmony brand and the factory in Chicago went on to produce millions of guitars, ukuleles and other stringed instruments until its demise in the mid-seventies. Harmony strove to keep up with evolving guitar trends over the years, but their market was always the mid to lower range of buyers. Nevertheless, they used quality materials and made some really interesting instruments sought by guitarists and collectors today. This particular guitar features the so-called 'Space Dot' logo on the headstock. Most would visualize the logo as the atomic symbol, prominent in this era. However, close examination will reveal a stylized S R which stands for Sears & Roebuck!

The body is made from solid birch. The back, sides and neck are chocolate-brown paint and the top natural. The neck is poplar. The 'binding' around the top is white paint. The neck features a slotted head and joins the body at the 12th fret.

Here's the catalog description: "The pumpkin-color finish on the thin birch top will stay lustrous and mar-free thanks to the protective shell-colored guardplate. Hardwood body with shaded mahogany-colored finish. Adjustable steel rod reinforces against neck warping. Ebonized maple fingerboard and bridge. 6 inlaid position markers. Celluloid binding on top edges. Decorative soundhole design."

The body measures 15 3/16" across at the lower bout. Scale length is 25 1/2". The neck is 2" across at the nut with string spacing 2 7/16" at the saddle. Action is set a 6/64".

There are no prior repairs evident. We recently reset the neck; fashioned a new bridge from hard maple (ebonized); leveled and dressed the frets.

The guitar plays really well and is a prime example of its ilk. These 12-fret, slot-head Harmonys have long been a VBG favorite for their look, playability, sound and value in the vintage market today.

Comes with a gig bag case.
