1979 Gibson The SG Walnut, refretted, changed pickups, original case - Natural
Description

Gibson's "The SG" — also known as the Firebrand SG — was a short-lived Norlin-era model produced from roughly 1979 to 1981. Designed as a stripped-down, working-musician instrument, it was built from solid walnut throughout — body and neck — with an ebony fretboard, and finished in a natural oil rather than a heavy polyester coat. That walnut/ebony combination gives these guitars a tonal character that's noticeably different from a standard mahogany SG: a bit denser in the low end, with a tighter, more focused midrange and a little more sustain. The 24.75" scale length and 1-11/16" nut width are standard Gibson territory, but the neck profile is a comfortable medium C shape that measures .829" at the first fret and .994" at the 12th — not a club neck, just a usable feel. Body dimensions follow SG convention at 13-1/8" lower bout, 1-3/8" deep, with an overall length of 39-1/8". At 8 lbs 2.5 oz, it's a touch heavier than a typical SG owing to the walnut, but still light compared to most solidbodies.
This particular example dates to August 3, 1979 and it comes with its original Gibson case. The body and neck finish are original. The ebony fretboard is in good shape and has been refretted. Action is currently set low and even at 2/32" on both the first and sixth strings at the 12th fret — this guitar plays really well.
The Schaller harmonica-style bridge and the tailpiece are original to the guitar and in fair condition;. Grover closed-gear tuners are original and in working order with original screws.
The pickups are not original — the bridge is a Seymour Duncan (stamped, reading 8.01k) and the neck is an unbranded humbucker reading 7.68k — both in good condition. Wiring and pots have been replaced as well. The black pickguard is in good condition. The control cavity cover is original plastic.
