Description

Gibson J50 1950 | $10,500 | (c2505) The J50 is the natural version of the popular J45, and debuted in 1942. The 'jumbo' Gibson flattops have proven to be quite popular with players over the years, and it's easy to understany why ... they play and sound really good. This particular example dates to 1950, and, but for the FON, has all the attributes of a late '40s J50; note especially the older-style rectangular bridge.

The X-braced top is spruce and features an extra ply of purfling when compared to the plainer J45 (and cost $5.00 more hence the '50' nomenclature). The back and sides are mahogany. The neck is mahogany and carved in a comfortable 'C'-shape. The fingerboard is Brazilian rosewood with side dots and pearl fret position markers. The head stock is painted black and sports the gold Gibson 'block G' logo. The tear drop pick guard is faux tortoise. The tuners are Kluson 'single line' enclosed and are not original to this guitar but are the exact tuners that should be found on a 1950 J50, complete with the pat. no. and no shaft exit hole on one side. The FON stamped on the neck block is 3804.

The body measures 16 1/8" across at the lower bout. Scale length is 25". The neck measures 1 3/4" at the nut, and string spacing is 2 3/8" at the saddle. Action is set at a very comfortable 4 & 6/64".

The guitar appears to be all original with the exception of the replaced and era-appropriate tuners. The evident prior repairs are a neatly done neck reset; some back and top braces glued; the bridge shaved a tad for better action. We recently glued a few top braces and dressed the frets. The finish is original with no overspray and shows some nicks and dings from age and use.

This is a very fine sounding and playing example of an early Gibson jumbo flattop guitar. The tone is woody, warm and mellow with lots of depth .. attributes which players love about these guitars.

Comes with a newer hard case in excellent condition.
