1967 Gibson Flying V "Early Issue with Elongated Rod Cover"

Description

The Flying V was revived in 1967. Following the example of the SG series of that era, it was introduced with a design featuring a large one-piece mahogany body and an assembly unit installed on the pickguard.
However, it failed to become a hit, and production was discontinued after only 175 units were made.

This is one of those 175 guitars—a Flying V manufactured in 1967.
This is the original cherry red finish and featuring a rare longer truss rod cover that was used on only a small number of instruments during the initial release.

Unfortunately, due to significant damage to the neck, restoration was deemed impossible, and a neck replacement was performed.
The repair was carried out by “Guitar Preservation,” led by Tom Murphy—a renowned expert in vintage guitar repair and restoration who is also well-known for his work on the Gibson Historic Series.
The neck was crafted by Tom’s close collaborator, Terry Mueller—a woodworking specialist with an extensive collection of vintage woods—
using Honduran mahogany to replicate the original neck’s grip shape. The original fingerboard was reused to restore the neck. Naturally, the finishing touches, including the finish and aging, were personally handled by Tom Murphy himself.

Includes a certificate of authenticity for “Guitar Preservation” signed by Tom Murphy himself.

It appears that a stop-tailpiece was once installed here, as the stud anchor holes have been filled and repaired.
