1959 Fender Telecaster – Leather Wrap (Sandy Coker)

Description

We love it when a guitar comes in that really blows us away, and Sandy Coker’s 1959 Fender Telecaster with its custom leather wrap did just that! Sandy Coker was a popular Western Swing guitar player well known for performing in various ensembles throughout his career, but most notably for playing with his father and sister in The Coker Family. This guitar started life as a Blond 1959 Fender Telecaster with slab rosewood fretboard. Soon after, the guitar was leather-wrapped by Ron McCarn, a musician and skilled craftsman. The leather wrap features a tooled floral design with the artist’s name, “SANDY,” prominently displayed in white, matching a leather strap which is also found in the case. From the wear to the back of the neck, it’s clear that this must’ve been Sandy’s go-to guitar, as it has that played-in, butter-smooth feel. Other bits of Sandy’s personality are present in the guitar, with a red-dyed wooden switch tip and an oversized screw as the string tree. On the back, there seem to be two tiny holes through the leather into the body, most likely from a “Go Around” Waist belt that was popular at the time. If only guitars could talk, this one would tell a wild story, all the while ready for its new adventure!

We’ve written in detail about this guitar and the practice of wrapping guitars in leather on our Blog here.
