The Asheville Music Tools ACV-1 is one of the more ambitious fully analog modulation pedals released in recent years. Designed by former Moog engineer Rick “Hawker” Shaich, it takes the traditional bucket-brigade chorus concept far beyond standard CE-1 territory, offering everything from lush vintage chorus and true pitch vibrato to flanging, slapback, resonant metallic textures, faux reverb, and self-oscillation. The ACV-1 feels less like a conventional stompbox and more like a compact modulation synthesizer built for guitar, bass, keys, and experimental signal chains.

At its core is a high-voltage X-Vive MN3007 BBD chip paired with a deep set of synth-inspired controls that allow extensive manipulation of delay time, modulation depth, feedback, phase, and tone shaping. It can comfortably cover classic ’70s and ’80s chorus sounds, but the real appeal is how far beyond those familiar textures it can travel. The extended delay range, selectable waveforms, CV/expression functionality, and near-infinite feedback make it equally at home in ambient, shoegaze, post-punk, experimental, or soundtrack-style setups.

Unlike many modern digital modulation pedals, the ACV-1 retains an unmistakably organic analog response. There’s a softness and dimensionality to the modulation that feels alive under the fingers, especially through a good tube amp. Players who appreciate pedals like the Moog Cluster Flux, vintage EHX Electric Mistress units, or old rack modulation gear will likely feel immediately at home here.
